4. Abraham Lincoln: James M. McPherson

"If they stake their lives for us they must be prompted by the strongest motive—even the promise of freedom. And the promise being made, must be kept."

79 pages total, with only 65 pages of primary text, this is a tiny biography of Lincoln, by the author of Battle Cry of Freedom. It's well-written, clear and concise, and probably a very good short intro for anyone unfamiliar with the basic facts of Lincoln's life and his importance. A little basic for me these days, but it only took me like an hour to read, so hey.
