6. Oryx and Crake (Margaret Atwood)

Ok. I had to read this book so I could take part in a book group discussion. It also happened that it was my turn to host the discussion, which means that I also had to provide snacks and a meal for the gathering. So what? So, in this circle (I am a relatively new member of this long-standing group), the food served historically ties in with the book. As I read the book, I marked or wrote down all of the different kinds of food the individuals encountered or scavenged to survive.

If you have read this book, you might wonder what the heck I ended up serving... pigoon? The story is set in a future world where scientific experiments and genetic engineering are a way of life. Jimmy and his friend, Glenn, who is aka Crake, begin a incredible journey through childhood and into adulthood in a world that we can only imagine.

Science fiction..........hm.... Has anyone else ever read this one? It was strranggge, imho.

Hey Ren,

This was a very interesting book. At least a couple of others have reviewed it in Doug's group...

I reviewed it back in 2008: http://www.dougshaw.com/dsbb/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13871

Ariel05 reviewed it back in 2007: http://www.dougshaw.com/dsbb/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5127

And el dogo reviewed it in 2006: http://www.dougshaw.com/dsbb/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3162

Atwood is an interesting writer. Her stuff is pretty dark and at least some of it is essentially post-apocalyptic science fiction. If you want to try something in that genre that is a little lighter I am certain that I and others in this forum can make some recommendations. Just ask!

Glad to see all these reviews!
