8. Olympos: Dan Simmons

The sequel to Ilium. The first book was very action-heavy (like much of Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion), but this one is more of a travelogue, with leisurely tours through several neat SF worlds (like Endymion and The Rise of Endymion). Literary allusions abound: Homer, Shakespeare, Nabokov, and a little Proust. Some passages of good writing, as when a hungover man thinks of the morning light streaming through the glass doors as "brilliant and despicable." At ~900 pages, it grew a little tiresome to me, but it reads easy, and I liked many of the characters (especially the cybernetic Mahnmut and Orphu). I've yet to find another Dan Simmons book as satisfying as his masterpiece Hyperion, but I'll keep looking.
