19. The Three Imposters and Other Stories: Arthur Machen

The subtitle is "Vol. 1 of the Best Weird Tales of Arthur Machen."

Good stuff in here. I was a little disappointed with “The Great God Pan” (I think Lovecraft’s “The Dunwich Horror” is better and—you don’t often get to say this about HPL—more exciting). But “The Three Imposters” was excellent, especially considering it contains an awkward frame-story that perversely undermines the stories it frames. This isn’t quite as postmodern as it sounds; I think Machen wrote the constituent stories first and then invented the framing device. Whatever; it works well. I still haven’t found any other Machen story to rival the incredible “The White People,” but these come pretty close.
