18. Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay

This was the inspiration for the Showtime series "Dexter". For the most part, everything is here. Dexter is a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department. And in his spare time, he finds bad people and kills them. The entire first season follows this book, wherein there's a different serial killer on the loose, one whom Dexter is very intrigued by and almost preternaturally connected to. He is torn between respect for this killer and keeping the facade that keeps him safe in his daily life.

This book is in a class by itself. The POV of someone so isolated from society isn't necessarily a new idea, but it's pulled off with flair and details that make it something un-put-down-able. Dexter is nowhere near as likable as on the television. But the two media are not trying to be the same thing. It works.

Recommended.
