1. Fevre Dream: George R. R. Martin

This is my second reading of what is—far, far and away—my favorite vampire novel. The setting is 1850s riverboat life, and it’s endlessly fascinating even without the vamps. But the tone is the best thing here: the book begins with enthusiasm and optimism, but by the end has shaded into elegy. The immortal stasis and cynicism of the vampire life is contrasted with loss, change, old age, decay, death—all that human business. This book is a masterpiece.
