9. The Selected Essays of Cyril Connolly: Cyril Connolly

A collection of essays by the famous critic. I enjoyed these, in a hazy way. Connolly is a fine stylist, with a mild wit that he can occasionally let run wild (as in the very weird, very gay James Bond satire “Bond Strikes Camp,” included here). Many of these essays are travel reportage or art appreciation, which I can appreciate from afar, as it were, without finding especially engaging. Still, if I ever return to France, Italy or Switzerland, I imagine I’ll take this book with me to tell me what I’m seeing. There are also several fine essays on literary subjects, including especially good ones on Oscar Wilde and Lawrence Sterne, and a few fluffy ones on Joyce.
