13. The Hour—A Cocktail Manifesto: Bernard DeVoto

A very short book (at a generous count 127 short pages, and many of those are taken up entirely by illustrations or drop quotes).

For the mixicologically conservative DeVoto, writing in 1948, a “cocktail” is only a martini, or a straight whiskey (with maybe a little water, if you’re feeling avant-garde). No other drink is acceptable, even the venerable Manhattan. He loathes rum, and I can only imagine what he would have to say about today’s tequila and vodka drinks. He is a very funny writer, and a very dry—let’s say bitter—one. Here’s a good review of the book by Michael Dirda. Mildly recommended for fans of old-school cocktails and New Yorker-style high-handedness.
