16. Lovecraft’s Providence & Adjacent Parts: Henry L.P. Beckwith, Jr.

I used this book in conjunction with parts of Philip A. Shreffler’s The H.P. Lovecraft Companion and Jason C. Eckhardt’s pamphlet Off the Ancient Track—A Lovecraftian Guide to New-England & Adjacent New-York, when my fiancée and I took a trip to New England this fall. We visited Providence, Boston, Marblehead, Gloucester, Newburyport, and sundry other parts, looking for the real-world places that H.P. Lovecraft used as models for the locations in his books. Beckwith’s book was pretty good at covering Providence (there’s an excellent walking tour), and Shreffler’s was surprisingly well-informed about the other towns. Eckhardt’s pamphlet was pretty superfluous.

Overall these were useful books, and there are a few web sites I found helpful, but they are all quite out-of-date, and the time seems right for someone to write an updated guide to Lovecraftian New England.
