5. Finishing the Hat by Stephen Sondheim

If you are a fan of musical theater and Sondheim, this is a delightful book to flip through. It contains all of Sondheim's lyrics beginning with West Side Story up through Sweeny Todd. It includes lyrics to songs that were cut, first versions of songs, footnotes about lyrics that Sondheim thinks he could now do better, and stories about working on each musical.

Also included are Sondheim's opinions on 20th century composers. Many of these are fascinating. In particular, his discussion of why Cole Porter is more successful that Noel Coward gave me much food for thought. I also enjoyed his thoughts about Frank Loesser.

I don't know if this is the kind of book you read straight through, but it was a good bedside book for a couple days. Recommended if you are interested in this sort of thing.
