9. Radioactive by Lauren Redniss

This is a beautiful illustrated book, primarily about Marie Curie's life and discovery of radioactivity (with her husband, Pierre Curie), with some side excursions into more modern bits about radioactivity.

The artwork is evocative and beautiful, and I learned a lot of things about Marie Curie's life that I did not know before. The sheer amount of radioactivity she (and others) were exposed to was amazing. I also didn't know about the tumult caused by her affair with a married man after her husband died. Also, all of her children ended up becoming scientists as well.

Reading this book was a lucky accident. I saw it on the new book shelf of the library, and immediately grabbed it. I don't remember hearing about it before, even though this is exactly the kind of thing that I would like. Recommended.

Sounds really interesting. You've already listed a bunch of stuff I didn't know about her either. Thanks!
